"Perfecting the Saints for the Work of Ministry…Empowering the Pew"
Ministry in the 21st century must reflect an “all of us” approach to the task of doing ministry. The top-down model of ministry does not effectively address an emerging model that favors a ministry of the congregants.
The early Christian church reflected an active and engaged group of people who were responsible for works of ministry. Leadership provided instruction and spiritual direction, but the members did the work of ministry. The knowledge of the Holy is not merely for holy men and women of the clergy, it is for those who sit in the pews, who are called to do the works of ministry as members of the body of Christ.
During Convocation 2010 and beyond our task is to target the pew, ignite a passion for ministry and effectively empower those in the pew to responsible service in the Kingdom of God. Throughout the United Church there should be active recruiting and developing of men, women, children and youth…boys and girls for the work of ministry. Target, train and empower! (Ephesians 4:11-13)
